    People who are trained in this industry spend their time diagnosing and correcting problems with cars, trucks, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. They also perform preventative maintenance to ensure that the customer's vehicle is able to withstand normal use without requiring major repairs.

    • Diagnostic testing.

    • Perform general maintenance services on vehicles, including oil changes, tire rotations and basic tune-ups.
    • Replace parts that have broken or become unsafe, such as worn brake pads and engines.
    • Prepare a report for the customer that outlines all services his or her vehicle received and make recommendations for future services. As an auto repair technician or mechanic, you will also prepare cost estimates for customers on future service recommendations.

    In 2010, there were nearly 725,000 people employed in the field of automotive repair. Of this number, the largest increase is expected in people who work as technicians and mechanics. The second largest increase is expected for those who are employed in installation, repair and maintenance occupations. These two areas represent a wide variety of job titles, including auto repair technician, general mechanic, shop owner and more. People working in this industry have the option of specializing in a specific type of vehicle, which may either limit their options or increase them. Those who are knowledgeable about older or obsolete vehicles may be able to command a higher salary than those with broad knowledge about many vehicle types.

    From now until the year 2020, the growth rate for people employed at all levels of auto repairs technicians and mechanics is expected to be 17 percent. This growth rate is considered average across all occupations. The highest average salary was reported by people who worked as auto repair technicians of mechanics for local governments.
